Online fraud victim gets money back on timely intervention of cyber cell

TrivandrumLife>> A woman in the city was robbed of Rs 70,700 in an online fraud. However, due to the timely intervention of the cyber cell of Thiruvananthapuram city police, around Rs 70,000 was recovered immediately. The woman, a native of Aramada in Poojappura station limits, was cheated by a person who called her mobile phone acting as an SBI officer.

Though the victim suspected when he mentioned about activation of the credit card which she received recently, the accused convinced her by giving details of her bank account number. Thus, she gave her card number and other details. The woman realised the fraud act only when she received a message of withdrawal of Rs 70,700 from her account. She immediately alerted the cyber cell, which made quick moves not only to recover money but also to block the card.

City police commissioner Balram Kumar Upadyaya said that money could be recovered in online fraud cases only if police were given immediate information. In most cases, victims realise the cheating only after a long time. Commissioner said that people should be very alert in giving card details and OTP numbers over phone calls. People in Thiruvananthapuram city can contact cyber cell at 9497975998 if they face any such issues. Commissioner also warned that people should be wary of fake advertisements in social media.
