You Are Being Watched – Surveillance Cameras Mapped
Gone are the days where you can skip past the policemen after ignoring traffic signals in Trivandrum. As you may have noticed by now, almost all busy junctions along the Eastfort – Vellayambalam road now have white poles with a globe like structure on its tip. Well, watch for it when you jump the signal next time. You are being watched through those globes.
Yes, 12 Surveillance Cameras are in place along city roads which can zoom and record objects upto 600 meters. Dome type cameras are used in Trivandrum, which can tilt and rotate giving a full 360 degrees freedom. These unlike the spy cams positioned in some places of the city to reduce crime and eve teasing, are used exclusively for recording traffic violations. It may be used for other purposes like crowd watch depending upon the situations like Onam rush.
Currently the cameras are placed in Vellayambalam, Museum, LMS, Palayam, VJT hall, Secretariat, Azad gate, Overbridge, Pazhavangadi, Eastfort, Thampanoor (ICH) , Thampanoor Ponnara park. Another camera will be placed at Keltron junction especially to track signal violators. A speed tracking camera will be placed in Kaudiar – Vellayambalam road to track teen racers who prefer that particular stretch as their version of a GP track. 25 more cameras will be placed soon in the city.
Traffic violations such as jumping signals, stopping on zebra cross, ignoring no parking warnings are registered through the Surveillance Cameras now. The cameras are powerful enough for them to charge you even for not wearing seat belts. The cameras are assisted with loud speakers so that police can alert people after watching them. So don’t get amazed next time when the loud speaker warns you not to park the car there. Once you are caught on camera for a violation, police will send a ticket to your address ( they will get it using your vehicle registration number ). You have to pay the fine by going to the station. And we cannot deny it as they have visual proof!
Still wondering where exactly they are placed in the city. Check our map. (The blue markers denotes the camera locations)
There may be cameras in undisclosed locations. So obey traffic rules even if you are not in visibility of the cameras marked in this map.

Yo! Trivandrum moving super-tech now.
I heard about this while in Trivandrum last time. The camera will be synchronized with the signals and will come alive once the red light is on. Those who break the signal will be automatically captured on the cam.
This will usher in a new road culture in the city. There are a few but smart guys who take these signals for granted, they’re all set to learn some hard taught lessons.

Gr8 2 hear about the new developments in Trivandrum city…. Is our cops really lazy to catch the traffic violators or don’t they want to get any pocket money simply ???

Yea! Cops can watch you starting from eastfort, follow you till Vellayambalam. But I am not sure whether it is synced with the traffic lights. As it’s a dome type camera its unlikely for them to be fixed to a particular angle. AFAIK, it can be remotely controlled and the police in charge at the control room can tilt, zoom the camera to 360 degrees and record it. So it is better than an automatic system.

Awesome stuff, Srijith. I understand that a total of 20 cameras are being planned in this phase. Trivandrum’s road culture is quite decent compared to a lot of other places, including some of India’s metros but there still arr quite a few rule-breakers around! I hope that fact that Big Brother is Watching will make them stick to the law.
Cheers!

Hi Ajay, I won’t agree that Trivandrum’s road culture is decent. Comparing to other districts in kerala including cochin, its very very poor. How may people are wearing helmet in trivandrum? it is very very less than any other place. Isn’t it? Driving at night in trivandrum is more hectic, many one won’t put the indicator itself while turning(some times will put the opposite). Any way I think this a good initiative from the government to bring a good traffic culure back to the capital city of kerala.

Apart from the use of helmets, for which I stand with Cochin, Trivandrum is better in road culture. Driving at night is better in trivandrum due to well lit and better roads.

I accept that the roads are better. But what is the use, if the people driving are not following the traffic rules..

Yes. I accept that. But ‘comparatively’ the traffic culture is better. Probably due to the absence of red private buses.

Its really bad roads when compared to other metro cities and even small cities in kerala, think the people itself are not concerned about the roads. Each and every day roads are dig and take long days / monts for repair. I think the city still lacks the quality and standard in it to continue maintain its name as Capital City of a state.
Camera’s can now track 4-wheeler, 2-wheelers and pedestrians lying in road because of these diggings and pothholes in the roads. Think media can use it for their daily circulation increase photos.

That’s not true. Ignoring the metros, people who travel around the country will accept that Kerala have better roads. I am not talking about the mammoth fly overs and six lane tracks. But in other cities, the road network is poor in not-so-remote places. Let is compare a place like vellayani in Trivandrum with it’s equialent place in any other states. You wont even see a road there.
I know a group of my friends from Xbhp.com who did a cross country road trip across India. No one else will know the roads better than some one who travelled the whole country in a two wheeler. They have appreciated that the roads in Kerala is far better than in other states. The infrastructure in Trivandrum is better when compared to other cities in Kerala, like the Delhi roads are better than Mumbai, even though Mumbai is more cosmopolitan.
Each and every day roads are dig and take long days / monts for repair.
True, because of the Japan project and the Road development works. Let’s wait till that is over.
