If done properly, plays can give a much better experience than movies, and it requires much more effort and talent - no retakes, and even if you get it right once, you have no guarantee of doing it right again for the next show. (unlike movies where once shooting is finished, no more effort required for any number of shows) I have been fortunate to watch the Madras Players in two of their plays http://ow.ly/1yXeF and Evam http://ow.ly/1yXhT I had wanted to watch this play while I was in Trivandrum last week, but instead watched the disappointing 'April Fool' instead.
