Preview : 97th Indian Science Congress

Today, I had a chance to go to the Mega Expo at the 97th Indian Science Congress that’s going on at Kariavattom Campus. Working so near to the campus, it would have been a shame if I couldn’t go and see it, and so today, my friend and I went there for a quick scan of what’s happening inside there! There is a traffic problem outside the campus because of this Expo. But the rush to see this exhibition, especially the crowd puller, the Kerala Gramam, is incredible! Volunteers were doing a very good job of organizing the crowd, making them follow the queue and maintain order. The crowd that we saw there were mainly students – both school and college level. First, we were led to the huge pavilion since it was nearly closing time for them. We saw many stalls inside the pavilion, that of Priyadarshini Planetarium, ISRO, Pollution Control, Tea Board, Coffee Board, Marine Board, BSNL, State Bank of Travancore, Artificial Limbs, Bhakthi Vedanta Institute, Sanskrit Board, Khadi Board etc. Most of the stalls are worth the visit, and be ready to spend oodles of time inside this pavilion, for we both wished we had much more time to spend in there.

After a quick glance at the stalls, we got out, saw models of GSLV and PSLV outside the ISRO’s stall, where they were explaining the working of a rocket. And what’s a science expo without ANERT? Yep! ANERT had a stall where they had two or three huge solar water heaters on display. Outside the pavilion, two working models of remotely operated vehicles impressed the crowd greatly, mainly students, who were looking at it in awe! The Vigyan Jyoti, which was a thought that was entirely new to me, rendered a sublime ambiance and was very inspiring. Though we wanted to linger around to see more, time was of the essence, so we advanced towards the Kerala Gramam, which was the main attraction of the Expo.

Inside the Kerala Gramam, we saw a model of a typical village in Keralam – the greenery, tree houses, village library, stalls, kaave(sacred grove), waterfalls, use of Eco-friendly building materials like mud and leaves, pottery making, bullock carts, scarecrows, paddy field, thatched roofs, wells etc. Further inside, there is a display of various snakes of Kerala. There are shops where we can buy roasted cashew, peanut candy, cocoa candy, herbs and herbal products. The candies are made right there before our very eyes. We bought peanut candy from there, which was still hot and soft, that it solidified into a bended shape inside my bag by the time I got home!

In short, the Mega Expo was worth the visit and it would have been a greater experience if my friend and I had more time to spend in there. The Expo is open from 8:00AM to 8:00PM. Tomorrow being the last day, I advise everyone to have at least a small peek at it!
