Another Harthal On 29 December

Today, some people in Kerala have been busy buying stuff for a day at home, some others have been busy cursing every political party around. Which means it is that time again – when shops close, when roads rest, when men and women stay indoors, and children stay happily away from schools. It is another harthal in Kerala on 29 December 2009.

This one is against price rise. And it is not the Left Front or the Congress but the BMS that is doing it. The 6 to 6 harthal will exempt milk supply, weddings, hospitals, ambulances and newspapers.

    Advantages of the hartal:
    1. The city will have the least minimum air pollution.
    2. Solace for stressed office goers.
    3. Fewer road accidents

    Disadvantages:
    1. People who fall in BPL (below the poverty line) category and those who feed themselves from what they earn that day will go hungry.
    2. Medical emergency cases wont find any mode of transportation (if they don’t have a vehicle of their own)
    3. Those new to the city will find themselves stranded.

Kerala is a politically conscious state. Almost every school and college is affiliated more to a political party than to a particular university.

Does anyone think of what impact an action will have on the rest of the people ? Do they weigh the pros and cons ? If the hartal organizers and leaders cant do any good, then why create problems for others ?

I am not the first to ask all these questions and surely not the last but personally i don’t see Kerala rising from the ashes during this lifetime…..

Wake up Kerala, Wake up !!!

  2. Another Harthal – when yu cant stop the hartal, enjoy a holiday! curl up in yur bed and read sum book!!

  3. We can stop Harthal by ignoring it! But everyone have to do it!

  4. @ srijith : thats the toughest thing! We tell people not to litter and that is something which causes them no harm, but you know how people react! And yu except people to ignore harthal! I believe people are waiting for a harthal…. !!

    • Disagree with that! Both are different. People actually hate harthal for the inconveniences it causes to them, unlike littering. If you dont believe, compare the attendance percentage on a harthal day 2~3 years back with the recent ones. Or simply, just take a walk on the road!

  5. hi, i ignored the harthal, today was a working day for me and i was there @office.
    :)

    • That’s it!!

      • This truly bad ….why is hartal so successful in Kerala.. even a small party can make hartal a very big success.. i am not going to start a new discussion here ..but i could like to see my city as the best city in this world to live.. what can i do ..please advise .. i am ready to do my part

  6. Talking about hartals, did you all hear about whats going on in our neighbouring state because an ageing film star died due to some medical condition?

I donno which among these are the worst! Ourselves, with dozens and dozens of hartals an year or the likes of Karnataka which goes on rampage for days because one film star died… :(
