A Clean City
The foreign tourist asked me – ” Do you know where they keep the wastebin”? I looked around, just to show him that i took his question seriously. But i knew that there are no wastebins around. Even if there is a waste bin, very few would use it and that very few, would soon find those wastebins full and overflowing. That foreigner was holding a paper cup in his hand and he could see the other cups thrown around him. But still the civic sense in him was active, eventhough he was in foreign country. Will we ever rise up to this civic sense to keep our city clean. Did we ever kept our city clean? My father says that trivandrum was one of the cleanest cities in India. But that was when the king was ruling?? Do we need the iron hand of a king to keep our city clean? Or cant we enjoy the freedom democracy offers to keep the city clean.
Workers of the kudumbasree toils in the dirt and slime to ensure cleanliness and still the callous minds clandestinely throw the waste on the road and in the vaccant plot owned by another. Do they ever realise that they are the victims of their thoughtless and selfish action. Every waste packet thrown out on the street, every carcass of slaughtered animals thrown to the thiruvallam and karamana rivers, every spittle which falls on the road, make a cesspool in our mind. So keeping the city clean may keep our body and mind clean. Let us dont wait to be clean humans till we go abroad…Let us keep our city clean first.

Good article Praveen. Do we, a few netizens, have any doable solutions?

Though there are waste bins at some place, primarily they are used as a ‘target’ to throw the wastes from vehicles … LOL

Good one! This is something we have to keep on improving.
Though it is a fact that Trivandrum is behind no city in India when it comes to cleanliness, we still have a huge scope for improvement. I believe we are slowly on track to regain our early fame in civic sense. Trivandrum Central is one among the cleanliest railway stations in India and we are on the process of procuring a handful of new road sweeping machines to make sure the avenues remain spic n span.
There ought to be stricter laws when it comes to common citizens. First of all the Corporation has to make sure that there are waste bins on every major roads like in the Western cities. That foreign tourist wouldn’t have asked that Q if there had been one in that place, neither would the place be littered around. Kudumbasree is a great initiative and with a better legislature we can help Trivandrum tackle the issue

I am a part of Tidycity.org which works hard to make people have ‘this’ civic sense. From my experience, every time I ask some one not to litter in public place, the question he/she shoots me is “Am I supposed to carry the waste home?”. The question is clear, and we will be left clueless about what answer we should give. Unless there are enough waste bins spread across the city (For which the tidycity.org is planning to submit a request to Corporation) and the general public are well educated about the need to use the waste bins to a level which will make it a part of their habit the situation wont change.
PS: One thing we learnt from the public surveys is that Trivandrum is ‘clean’ when compared to other cities in kerala or India.

No doubt that Trivandrum is one of the cleanest cities of India..compared to Ernakulam or Chennai, Trivandrum is far better. The Kudamba sri unit seems like a great success here..coz at ma place, ie, ekm, its not so..but I wonder y there is no waste bins here at tvm?? forcing the common people to litter!! coz i have to do littering even though i am against littering..there is no option left..hope the corporation will place the adequate waste bins soon..and happy to know about tidycity.org..all the best people.

Well the Chennai city model should be implemented, where they have started keeping big dustbins in many places in city as well as around residential areas. These dustbins is then cleared by the authorities every morning. As we all know the city Chennai, this project has drastically helperd them to control the clty getting dirtier. So a better planned dustbins around city and residential areas will pave way for a major change towards cleaning this beautiful city

About the building collapse in Trivandrum?? Tragic…Six lives lost for nothing. The rescue workers worked hard to save lives with the minimum equipments and minimum experience in handling such kind of an accident. Thanks to them. But whos responsible for it?
The lodge Owner? The building contractor? The civil engineer? The muncipal authorties? Will there be only scape goats?
