35th National Games Stadia: Designs Approved

Bonanza time for sports lovers of Trivandrum! The city is going to have 2 new world class sports facilities in less than 2 years time, which the whole city and state would be proud of.

Designs for the 2 greenfield stadia to be constructed for 35th National Games in Kerala have been approved. Take a looke at the stunning beauties.

National Games main stadium

Designed by consortia including Trivandrum based architects JCJR Partnership, this state-of-the-art stadium will easily stand out among the uninspiring concrete bowls we have in our country. Keeping in mind the economic prospects of being one of the homegrounds for  IPL-Kerala team, this stadium is structured to host cricket and football matches. For National Games, it will host the opening and closing ceremonies.

The stadium will also feature mall-space, trade and exhibition center, media center and all modern facilities a nouveau sports arena should have. A dedicated 700m, 4 lane road will be constructed to the location from NH 47, starting from the eastern side of National Highway Research Institute, opposite Kerala University.

Capacity: 50,000

Land area: 37 acres

Cost: 140 crores

Location: off NH 47, Karyavattom

Tiers: 2

Floodlights: 6 towers

Parking: 3000 cars (separate 6 storied parking plaza)

This brand-new indoor sports facility will have clay tennis courts, swimming pools, handball and squash courts in various arenas. This will be the second fully fledged indoor sports facility in Trivandrum after Jimmy George Indoor Stadium in Vellayambalam.

Area: 6.5 acres

Cost: 45 crores

Location: Polytechnic Campus, Vattiyoorkkavu

Central Stadium redesign

One of city’s old sporting arena, the Central Stadium is all set to undergo a radical plastic surgery for the National Games. The highlight of the design will be the 3 gates of the stadium taking after the Roman style of architecture of  Secretariat Complex. The main pavillion will also be refurbished, a permanent VIP pavillion will be added and an underground parking facility will be constructed. This will be a huge relief to the chronic parking shortage the city-center faces.  Considerable chunk of retail space is also incorporated into the aesthetic design as revenue-earning means.

Capacity: 15,000

Cost: 45 crores

Location: Behind Secretariat

Gates: 3

Parking: 300 cars

The city will also see the addition of new sports facilities apart from the above ones as part of the Games. A major development will be the completion of the International Aquatic Complex in Pirappincode, MC Road. There will be a new Water Sports complex built beside Jimmy George Indoor Stadium on Water Works grounds. The University Stadium with its new synthetic track and Chandrasekharan Nair stadium with new facilities also gear up for the National games- Kerala.

  1. Speechless!! I thought the airport will be the modern landmark structure for Trivandrum for some time! And I am wrong!

  2. Hope Kerala will not be looking to Common Wealth Games organization committee for examples of how to build these new stadia.

    • No! There is a critical difference between those who are behind these stadia and those behind Commonwealth Games. In the latter, Kalmadi and co is just bothered about ways to fill their kitty. How the Games are conducted and the reputation of our country are things they’re least bothered about.

Whereas in the case of these arenas in Kerala, the people behind it has an honest intention to see world class, economically viable infrastructure which will serve multiple purposes when it comes to the development of our city. That is why the Cricket Stadium we see above, which is going to be built at a cost of 140 crores, will be one of the best in the nation while Kalmadi has leaked 960 crores taxpayers money just for ‘renovation’ of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

      So, tale of two stadia?

      • I also would like to see a good intention from the people behind the stadia project. But from what ever we see these days, we are forced to believe otherwise. Anyway, let us all hope that these stadia are built properly and we have a very nice city in future.

The designs look world standard. However, the skeptic in me says that this is just too good to be true considering how much we’ve neglected sports in our state. It’s about time that Kerala had world class infrastructure and built a sports culture in the state. I wish some people with real substance take this project forward looking at the long-term benefits. All the best!

Amazing is it in Trivandrum, best wishes to all behind this

  10. Sreelal /

Yes, Actually i am the one behind this.

  11. The designs are great & the plans if executed to perfection would give the sports enthusiasts ample avenue…

But all these preparations for the upcoming national games!!! Will it be completed in time or is it tht this years (2010) national games would only be conducted in 2015 or beyond…

It is learnt tht the swimming pool at water works have been closed for renovation for somtime & the Jimmy George stadium aswl closed for renovation (but no work started) & the Shangumugham indoor recreation centre (basicaly for badminton) aswl closed down for renovation.

If the administration is concerned to provide sports facility, they should take up the venues one by one & finish the work & then take up further rennovation projects.

This is a special impetus to Kerala. Such infrastructure is the need of the day and India must strive for perfection. Just hope the CWG 2010 doesn’t turn out to be a flop.

    • Many projects never take off or get stalled chiefly because of financial issues. As for National Games there is no dearth of finances and these projects are on the verge of commencement.

it will transform the trditional look of kerala sports

After seeing many development projects in our state………..

The actual cost mentioned will be 5 times (minimum)of the cost mentioned.
The pictures are nice to see, but the actual will be “hopeless”.
The profit and growth of our great politicians and bureaucrats will be higher than our expectations.
Our people have to change their attitude, instead boasting of the culture of our ancestors.

I felt the following habits from our brothers and sisters during my ;ast visit to our capital city

    * respect to others
    * lack of patience
    * commitment to society

Babu KG (a well wisher for Maveli’s Keralam)

Dear you should see the future developments for our children that we give. Never see and mix up with financial stakes and the politicians interest etc., etc., Really speaking donot worry about the politicians. Because they need only our Votes. with the voting power in their hands the people can make the politicians to dance to their tunes. Do not worry. All is for best

  18. narayanan /

AAH what a lovely developments for Kerala

  19. Jothish Nair /

I don’t have even a tinge of doubt in the intentions of sports minister Vijayakumar. He’s a different politician altogether. these stadias will definitely take the Kerala sports to a greater level if the legacy part is taken care off!!

  20. Funnyguy /

Haha, we dont have roads and you wanna build stadia??? We could not make a CWG happen before calling it CommonFilth Games and you expect Kerala of all the states to host a National Games. HiHiHiHi! Sorry but i can’t help LFMAO

    • Cant help me not to notice that you really are FUNNY!
We need to grow up and realize that for better roads and infrastructure, there needs to be some kind of nucleus. We dont have enough industries, and the two things on which we are surviving are IT and Tourism. These two sectors have contributed a lot in accelerating the infrastructure development in Kerala. Now, there is a chance for us to have another sector – Sports. Silly it may sound, but having good stadia will attract more events to the state even after NG and it will boost the development of the state, atleast in a minor way
